Restricted free agency

A restricted free agent can field offers from other teams, but his current team gets the last word: it can match any deal he signs and keep him. The restriction is the leash.

Teams use it to hold onto young players coming off their rookie deals. The player can shop around, but his old team usually controls how the story ends.
