Unrestricted free agent

An unrestricted free agent is a player who can sign with anyone, for whatever they offer, with no strings. His old team gets no special right to keep him beyond the extra money and years its Bird rights allow.

This is what most people picture when they hear free agency: a player genuinely on the open market, free to walk.
