Contracts
The stretch provision lets a team spread the money it still owes a waived player over more years, so the yearly hit on the cap gets smaller. The math is simple: take the guaranteed money left and stretch it over twice the remaining years plus one.
It is a trade-off, not a magic eraser. A team lowers this season's number but signs up to carry that player's dead money for seasons after he is long gone.
