Dead money

Dead money is guaranteed salary a team still owes a player it waived. It stays on the books and counts against the cap, luxury tax, and aprons: paying a player not to play.

The "stretch provision" can spread the remaining money over twice the remaining years plus one, lowering the annual hit at the cost of more seasons carrying it.
