10-day contract

A 10-day contract is exactly what it sounds like: a short, in-season minimum deal teams use to audition a player or patch an injury hole for a couple of weeks.

A team can give a player two 10-days. After that it has to either sign him for the rest of the season or let him go, so the second one is usually a real tryout for a roster spot.
